The Great North Run is a half marathon that takes place in September each year. Many runners believe that, despite a largely unappealing course, it is also the best. The mixture of elite, club, celebrity and fun runner is perfectly blended, and the extensive TV and media coverage means few people inside Britain are aware that any other world half marathon is important - and that includes the World Championships.
